Currency & Banking

In Mozambique, the meticais is the local currency.​

The exchange rate is approx. 63 mts to $1 USD.​

​

Euros and dollars can be exchanged at banks in Inhambane, Tofo, Vilanculos and Maputo. NOTE that USD bank notes older than 2007 are not accepted in Mozambique. You can exchange dollars, euros and rands at most guesthouses, restaurants and bars in Tofo. Mastercard and Visa is widely accepted. Maestrocard works at only one type of bank. ​

Banks are generally open Mon - Fri from 7:30 - 15:30, and passports are necessary when changing currency. Travelers checks are not accepted.

Visas

Tourist visas can be issued at both land borders and international airports upon arrival in Mozambique. Sometimes it can be time-consuming, but is generally straight forward. Vilanculos airport is notably faster to receive a visa from than Maputo airport. Please bring your flight tickets printed as well as a copy, as well as a Travel Voucher / Invoice for your journey. Sometimes authorities want to see a copy of the return flight, as well as a confirmed hotel booking. We can send you an invitation letter before you arrive.

If you plan on applying for your visa before arriving, you will need to send some documents to the Mozambican embassy, as well as fill out an online application. You will need to send following documents:

• Passport (with minimum of 6 month validity)

• 2 passport pictures (color)

• Application form – filled in

• Flight Tickets

• Confirmation letter from the travel agency

• In case you have a rental car – rental car agreement • Proof of Visa payment (see below)

Visa Exemptions

Mozambique has announced visa exemption for 28 countries for tourism and business. The exemption applies to visitors holding ordinary passports and allows for a 30-day stay, renewable to an additional 60 days. Travelers are required to register on an e-platform for pre-screening at least 48 hours before traveling and to pay a processing fee upon arrival of MZN650 (about $10). 

 

Important note: Due to technical issues the digital registration upfront is not operational and visitors from the below list can receive the entrance stamp without any previous registration.

E-Visa

Go to the website evisa.gov.mz. First, you will need to register an account. Then, follow the process to apply for a tourist visa (multiple entry) or border visa (30 days entry). We recommend the 30-day single-entry visa for general touristic visits of Mozambique.

When doing your online application, be prepared to upload following documents:

• a photo of your passport

• a recent passport size photo

• proof of funds (bank statement)

• proof of accommodation booking (TAC to provide)

Make sure that your documents are smaller than 2 Mb.

 

Once all is submitted, it can take up to five business days before receiving an answer of approval. They will send you a ‘preliminary visa’ which you can download, print and take to the border. You have to INCLUDE IN THE ONLINE APPLICATION FORM which border you are entering at, and if you plan to travel car, you will need to provide the vehicle registration number (or ask TAC for this information if we are arranging your land transfer).

NOTE: You will not pay for your visa online. You will pay at the border (USD and EUROS accepted) and ideally you bring the respective money in cash. It is also recommended to apply for the online visa not more than 60 Days prior to departure. The Tourism Visa is valid for 30 days and the visa can be applied for from 60 days prior the actual travel date.

 

COVID-19

As of May 2023, there are no more COVID-19 entry requirements or in-country restrictions. 

 

Vaccinations

Diphtheria, Hepatitis A & B, Tetanus and Typhoid are recommended for journeys through remote Mozambique. Malaria Prophylaxis is also recommended in all of Mozambique as the whole country is in a malarial zone. Lariam, Malarone, or Doxycyclane are the most well-known anti-malarial medications.

 

Yellow Fever is necessary to show proof of vaccination at entry ONLY IF you arrive from a country where there is yellow fever.

We strongly suggest consulting with a travel / infectious diseases doctor before departing for their opinion.

 

Travel Insurance

Travel Insurance, including flight evacuation, is strongly recommended. DAN South Africa offers full diving Insurances, with Deco and Evacuation to South Africa.

 

The hospital in Inhambane is very basic and is not comparable with a European hospital, though it's effective for emergency triage and stabilizing before moving onto a more well-equipped medical center in Maputo or abroad. Private clinics in Maputo are better for more severe situations, but are still generally lower quality than hospitals in neighboring South Africa. 

What to Bring

Sunscreen, mosquito repellent, sun hat and general sun protection, light-colored clothing, credit card and debit card which can function abroad, extra cash, passport copies, long clothes for evening mosquito protection, and your camera!

 

Tips

We recommend tipping between 5-10%, however, there is generally not an obligation to tip in Mozambique.

 

Criminality

Although the level of crime is much lower than its neighboring countries, you should take the same precautions you would do in big cities to avoid petty theft, such as pick-pocketing. Also, never leave your belongings unattended on the beach or in public areas, and stay clear of isolated areas at night and avoid walking alone at night.
